Where to Stay in Singapore: The Best Neighborhoods for Your Trip
Choosing where to stay in Singapore may seem secondary in a city with such efficient public transport. But your neighborhood can genuinely shape the experience: atmosphere, budget, access to the main sights and evening life vary quite a bit from one area to another.
For a first trip, these are the neighborhoods we would prioritize depending on how you like to travel.

Marina Bay: For a Spectacular First Stay
Marina Bay is the most impressive choice. You are right in the heart of modern Singapore, close to Gardens by the Bay, the Merlion and many of the city’s most iconic sights.
It is also one of the most expensive areas in the city. We would mainly recommend it if you want to treat yourself, are only staying for a few days or are looking for a hotel with a real skyline view.
Our view: a fantastic location, but far from essential if you are traveling on a tighter budget.

Chinatown: The Best All-Round Choice for Sightseeing
Chinatown is probably the neighborhood we recommend most for a first stay. It is central, extremely well connected and lively enough to head out for dinner on foot in the evening.
You are close to temples, hawker centers, Clarke Quay and the city center, while accommodation is generally more affordable than around Marina Bay.
Our view: the best balance of location, atmosphere and budget.
Bugis and Kampong Gelam: For the Atmosphere
Around Bugis, Arab Street and Haji Lane, the atmosphere feels more relaxed. Cafés, street art, independent shops and restaurants make the area particularly enjoyable, especially for couples or travelers who like exploring on foot.
Bugis remains very central and gives you quick MRT access to Marina Bay, Little India and Orchard.
Our view: our favorite alternative to Chinatown.

Little India: For a Lower Budget
Little India is an excellent option if you are looking for more affordable accommodation. The neighborhood is lively, colorful, well connected and packed with inexpensive places to eat.
The atmosphere is denser and busier than in some other parts of the city, which may not suit everyone.
Our view: a very good choice for budget travelers.

Orchard Road: For Shopping and Comfort
Orchard Road is packed with shopping malls, restaurants and large hotels. The area is convenient and extremely well connected, but has less character than Chinatown, Kampong Gelam or Little India.
Our view: best suited to travelers who see shopping as one of their priorities.
So, Where Should You Stay in Singapore?
For a first trip, our choice would still be Chinatown. Bugis and Kampong Gelam come just behind for their atmosphere. Marina Bay is ideal if you want to splurge, while Little India generally makes it easier to keep accommodation costs under control.
