Hot Air Balloon Ride in Vang Vieng, Laos: Price, What Happens & What to Expect?
Vang Vieng is already spectacular from the ground. But from above, the valley takes on a completely different dimension.
A hot air balloon ride in Vang Vieng lets you fly over the Nam Song River, rice fields and, above all, the huge karst formations surrounding the town. It is one of the destination’s signature experiences and is now also highlighted by the Lao national tourism office.
For an official introduction to Vang Vieng and its activities, see Tourism Laos – Vientiane Province.
We chose the sunrise flight.

How Much Does a Hot Air Balloon Ride in Vang Vieng Cost?
Prices vary depending on the operator and the package you choose.
In our guide, we recorded a price of around 3,750,000 kip, or roughly €150 per person, for a sunrise flight.
It is clearly one of the most expensive activities you can do during a trip to Laos.
But unlike many highly touristy experiences, the price here mainly reflects something that is difficult to recreate any other way: seeing the entire valley from the air.

What Is the Experience Like?
Allow around 3 hours for the entire activity, not just the time spent in the air.
If you choose sunrise, the meeting time is usually very early.
You then head to the launch site, where the crew prepares and inflates the balloon. That is already an interesting part of the experience: watching the envelope gradually take shape in the middle of the countryside before takeoff.
Once inside the basket, the ascent is surprisingly smooth.
No engine, almost no constant noise. You simply gain altitude while Vang Vieng slowly wakes up below you.

What Can You See From the Hot Air Balloon?
This is the main reason the experience is worth it.
Vang Vieng’s landscape is dominated by steep limestone formations, the Nam Song River and the agricultural land surrounding the town. The Lao tourism office also describes Vang Vieng as a town surrounded by rivers and mountains, at the heart of a particularly striking limestone landscape.
From the basket, the whole valley becomes much easier to understand.
You can see the river winding through the landscape, villages, rice fields and mountains that suddenly look far more impressive than they do from ground level.
At sunrise, the low light adds even more depth to the landscape and can create a light mist around the mountains.
Sunrise or Sunset?
We chose sunrise, and that is what we would choose again.
The light is often softer and the atmosphere much calmer.
Sunset can obviously be beautiful too, but conditions depend more on the weather that has developed throughout the day.
Either way, hot air ballooning is highly dependent on wind and visibility. A flight can therefore be delayed or canceled if conditions are not suitable.
The flight itself lasts around 45 minutes.

Should You Book in Advance?
Yes.
Our guide recommends booking several days ahead, especially if you have limited time in Vang Vieng or specifically want a sunrise departure.
We would avoid scheduling this activity for your final morning in town.
If the weather is poor, keeping an extra day available gives you a chance to reschedule the flight.

Is It Worth the Price?
For us, yes, as long as you accept that this is a premium activity.
In Vang Vieng, many other experiences cost very little: the Blue Lagoons, for example, are among the most affordable activities in the area in our guide.
The hot air balloon therefore sits at the opposite end of the budget spectrum.
But if you had to choose just one truly exceptional experience in Vang Vieng, this would probably be it.
Our view: the hot air balloon ride in Vang Vieng is expensive, but the landscape justifies the experience. Flying over the Nam Song River and the karst mountains at sunrise gives you a perspective that no ordinary viewpoint can reproduce. If your budget allows it, we would keep it in the itinerary without hesitation.
