Quand partir en Thaïlande ? Météo, mousson et îles selon les saisons

When Is the Best Time to Visit Thailand? Weather, Monsoon & Islands by Season

Asking when to visit Thailand sounds like it should have a simple answer. It does not.

The country stretches for more than 1,500 kilometers, and its different regions do not experience exactly the same seasons at the same time. It may rain regularly in Phuket while Koh Samui is still enjoying sunny days, or feel extremely hot in Bangkok while the mountains of the north remain more comfortable.

So the real question is not so much “What is the best season to visit Thailand?” but rather: “Which region of Thailand should you choose for the dates you can travel?”

Planning your trip?

If you want to follow this route without having to rebuild all the logistics yourself, the TAMAP Thailand Guide details the actual journeys, travel times, best areas to stay, access, prices we observed, excursions and alternatives. Its itineraries are flexible: you can follow them as they are, keep individual days or build your own route using the same framework. Then it is yours to turn into your own trip.

Thailand weather in a nutshell

Thailand is generally divided into three main periods:

November to February: a drier and generally cooler season.
March to May: the hot season, with temperatures that can become very high.
May to October: monsoon season across much of the country.

But this nationwide overview hides one major difference: the two coasts do not experience their wettest period at exactly the same time.

This is particularly important if beaches and islands are a major part of your trip.

November to February: the easiest time to travel

For a first trip covering several regions, November to February remains the easiest period. Bangkok is generally more comfortable, the north sees milder temperatures and the Andaman coast enters its high season. The Tourism Authority of Thailand also places the start of the high season on the Andaman coast around November.

It is therefore an excellent time to combine: Bangkok + Chiang Mai / Chiang Rai + Phuket / Krabi / Phi Phi

The downside is obvious: it is also one of the busiest periods. Accommodation can be more expensive, and the best-known places, particularly Phi Phi, Maya Bay and Phuket’s beaches, attract large crowds.

March and April: good weather, but much hotter

From March onward, temperatures rise noticeably.

That does not make traveling impossible, far from it. The beaches remain appealing and the weather can still be excellent. But Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai can become exhausting in the middle of the day.

April is generally one of the hottest months. It is also the month of Songkran, the Thai New Year, with huge water fights across the country.

If you handle heat well and are looking for a festive atmosphere, it can be a memorable time to visit.

If you are planning lots of temples, walking or scooter riding in the north, it is less comfortable.

May to October: should you avoid Thailand during monsoon season?

No. This is probably one of the most misleading ideas when planning a trip.

The rainy season does not necessarily mean continuous rain from morning to night. You can experience long dry periods between tropical downpours, which may be intense but relatively short.

However, the monsoon can have a much more practical impact on boat transportation, excursions and sea conditions. The Thai Meteorological Department regularly issues warnings for strong waves when the southwest monsoon intensifies, particularly in the Andaman Sea. Recent episodes have, for example, produced waves several meters high along this coast.

So it is not the rain itself that matters most, but what it can change in your itinerary.

Phuket and Krabi: when should you visit the Andaman Sea?

For Phuket, Krabi, Koh Phi Phi and Koh Lanta, the easiest period generally runs from November to April.

From May onward, the southwest monsoon affects this coast more strongly. Some days will be beautiful. Others will be far less suitable for boat trips.

September illustrates this difference well: Tourism Thailand tends to recommend the Gulf of Thailand instead, as the monsoon remains more active over the Andaman Sea.

Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao: a different seasonal pattern

This is where Thailand becomes particularly interesting.

Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao are located in the Gulf of Thailand, and their seasonal pattern differs from Phuket and Krabi.

That is precisely what can sometimes save a summer trip. In July or August, when the Andaman coast may experience more rain and rougher seas, the Gulf can offer more favorable conditions.

That is why we would never choose a Thai island simply because it is “the most beautiful.” We would look at the month of travel first.

Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai: when should you visit northern Thailand?

The north follows another pattern again.

From November to February, temperatures are generally more pleasant and mornings can even feel cool in mountainous areas. This is probably the period we would prioritize for Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai or a road trip through the mountains.

From March onward, two factors can make travel more difficult: the heat, first, and then air quality, which can deteriorate during the agricultural burning season.

The timing varies from year to year, so it is better to check current conditions before departure rather than treat it as a fixed calendar period.

During the monsoon, on the other hand, northern Thailand becomes intensely green. The scenery can be beautiful, but mountain roads require more caution.

Bangkok: can you visit all year round?

Yes. But comfort varies a lot.

November to February generally offers the most pleasant conditions.

March to May can be extremely hot.

May to October brings more rain and humidity.

The city is still much less dependent on the weather than the islands. A downpour in Bangkok rarely changes your entire trip. Rough seas around Phi Phi can cancel a full excursion.

Which region of Thailand should you choose by month?

Period Regions we would prioritize
November – February Bangkok, northern Thailand, Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi, Koh Samui
March – April Southern Thailand and the islands, with extra caution around the heat in cities and the north
May – June Travel remains possible across the country, but weather becomes more variable
July – August Prefer the Gulf of Thailand: Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao
September – October Adapt your itinerary carefully depending on weather and sea conditions
Late November – December Gradual return of very favorable conditions across much of the country

Keep in mind that tropical weather never follows the calendar perfectly.

If you now want to turn these seasonal choices into a concrete route, our Thailand 2-Week Itinerary: What to See in 15 Days? covers Bangkok, southern Thailand and the north, with stops designed to remain coherent over two weeks.

So, what is the best time to visit Thailand?

If you are looking for the most stable weather conditions, November to February remains the easiest period overall.

But if you are looking for the best balance between weather, crowds and prices, we would lean more toward March – April and October – November.

These periods can often offer good conditions while avoiding part of the peak tourist season from December to February.

Most importantly, the best time always depends on your itinerary: Phuket and Krabi do not follow exactly the same seasonal pattern as Koh Samui, while northern Thailand comes with its own constraints.

That is the logic we would follow: choose the region according to the season, rather than searching for one perfect month for all of Thailand.
