Bali or Lombok: Which Island Should You Choose?

Bali and Lombok are separated by only a narrow strait, but the experience on the ground is very different. Bali is more developed, more varied and easier to organize. Lombok is quieter, wilder and more focused on nature.

So which one should you choose for your trip to Indonesia?

Before you go, also read our article Bali 10-Day Itinerary: What to See Without Rushing?. To plan your transfers, our article How Many Islands Can You Visit on a Short Trip to Indonesia? will help you anticipate the logistics.

Bali: For a Complete First Trip

Bali is the easiest island to recommend if this is your first trip to Indonesia.

In just a few days, you can go from the temples and rice terraces of Ubud to the beaches of the south, discover waterfalls, climb Mount Batur, take a surf lesson or end the day at a beach club.

The range of accommodation, restaurants and activities is huge. Getting around is also easy to organize with a driver, scooter or apps such as Grab and Gojek.

The downside is obvious: Bali is very touristy. In the south and around Ubud, traffic can be heavy and some places extremely crowded.

Choose Bali if you want: plenty to see, a wide variety of activities, solid tourism infrastructure and a trip that is easy to organize.

Lombok: For Nature and More Peace and Quiet

Lombok quickly feels different. The island is less urbanized, less crowded and sometimes requires a little more planning to get around.

Its biggest strength is its landscapes. The south around Kuta Lombok is home to some of the island’s best beaches, including Tanjung Aan and Selong Belanak. Farther north, Mount Rinjani rises to 3,726 meters and offers one of Indonesia’s great volcanic treks.

Lombok also gives you a chance to discover Sasak culture and serves as a gateway to the Gili Islands.

The overall atmosphere is quieter than in Bali, but the range of restaurants, hotels and activities is less extensive.

Choose Lombok if you want: beautiful beaches, more nature, fewer crowds and a slightly more adventurous trip.

What About the Beaches?

If the beach is your absolute priority, we would give Lombok the edge.

Bali has some beautiful spots, especially around Uluwatu, but Lombok offers more of that feeling of wide beaches with relatively little development, particularly along the south coast.

Bali remains the better choice if you want to easily combine beach time with culture, restaurants, temples and nightlife.

Bali or Lombok: Our View

For a first trip to Indonesia, we would choose Bali. It lets you experience a lot without making the logistics complicated and suits almost every type of traveler.

For a second trip, or if your priority is nature, beaches and tranquility, Lombok has the advantage.

And if you have at least two weeks, there is no need to choose: the two islands are easy to combine by boat or plane. Bali and Lombok are linked, among other options, by ferry between Padangbai and Lembar.
