Angkor Wat au lever du soleil au Cambodge

Angkor Wat at Sunrise: Is It Really Worth It?

The sunrise at Angkor Wat is one of those experiences you see everywhere before even setting foot in Cambodia: the temple towers still in silhouette, their reflection in the pools, then an orange sky gradually lighting up behind them.

On paper, it is hard to imagine anything more spectacular.

In reality, two things can completely change the experience: the crowds and the weather.

So, is it really worth getting up in the middle of the night?

What Is Sunrise at Angkor Wat Like?

You need to leave Siem Reap around 4:30 to 5:00 AM to be in front of the temple before dawn.

Once there, most visitors head toward the reflecting pools in front of Angkor Wat, which offer the now-iconic composition: the temple mirrored in the water.

That is also where the main problem lies.

Everyone wants more or less the same photo.

If you arrive late, the best spots are already taken and you may end up seeing Angkor Wat behind several rows of phones and cameras.

Arriving early enough therefore gives you time to choose your position and, more importantly, enjoy a few quieter minutes before the main crowds arrive.

Is It Really as Crowded as People Say?

Yes, it can be very crowded.

But the crowds are mainly concentrated around a few specific spots, especially the reflecting pools.

Sometimes, simply moving a little farther away is enough to make the experience much more pleasant.

And somewhat paradoxically, arriving for sunrise also has an advantage: once the spectacle is over, you are already there very early to begin exploring the temple.

While some visitors head back for breakfast, you can continue directly into Angkor Wat.

So the very early wake-up is not only about getting a photo.

The Real Issue in Our View: the Weather

This is probably the most underestimated factor.

When you book your tuk-tuk or plan Angkor Wat for 5 AM, you naturally imagine a perfectly visible sun rising behind the towers.

But of course, you cannot book the sky with your entrance ticket.

We experienced both situations.

When conditions are good, the light gradually appearing behind the silhouette of Angkor Wat is genuinely spectacular.

But we also watched sunrise under a completely overcast sky: no visible sun, no dramatic burst of color, just a gray light slowly getting brighter.

The experience still feels special because you watch the temple emerge from darkness.

But to be clear: it is not the same thing.

Can You Predict Whether the Sunrise Will Be Good?

Not with any real certainty.

You can obviously check the weather forecast the day before, look at cloud cover and avoid a morning expected to be very rainy.

But in a tropical climate, conditions can change quickly.

An overcast sky at wake-up can clear. On the other hand, a few clouds may be enough to block exactly where the sun rises.

So a beautiful sunrise should be treated as a possibility, not a guarantee.

That matters if you only have one morning planned at Angkor.

Sunrise or Sunset at Angkor: Which Should You Choose?

The two experiences are quite different.

Sunrise at Angkor Wat remains the more iconic option. The temple silhouette works particularly well at dawn, and the atmosphere before the site fully wakes up has something special about it.

Sunset, on the other hand, gives you more flexibility.

You are already inside the park, you know what the day’s weather has been like, and you can choose your viewpoint accordingly.

But if you had to choose only one for a first visit, we would still go with sunrise at Angkor Wat.

Not just for the photo, but because it also lets you start the day early and continue exploring before the hottest hours.

How Can You Make the Most of It?

Arrive early.

Do not focus only on the first reflecting pool you see, and be willing to sacrifice the “perfect” photo spot for a little more space.

Also bring a light layer: before sunrise, it can feel surprisingly cool compared with the heat later in the day.

And above all, do not build the entire experience around the photo you saw on Instagram.

Angkor Wat is still impressive even if the sun decides not to cooperate.

Our view: yes, sunrise at Angkor Wat is worth it. But not because it guarantees a perfect photo. The crowds are real but manageable if you arrive early enough. The weather, however, remains completely unpredictable. You need to come for the whole experience: arriving in the dark, watching the towers slowly appear, hearing the site wake up and beginning your visit before a large part of the crowd.

If the sky lights up behind Angkor Wat, even better. If it stays gray, you will still have experienced one of the world’s most extraordinary temples at a very particular moment of the day.
