Perhentian Kecil or Besar: Which Island Should You Choose?

The Perhentian Islands are mainly made up of two islands: Perhentian Kecil, the smaller one, and Perhentian Besar, the larger one.

On paper, the difference may seem minor. Both offer tropical beaches, crystal-clear water, snorkeling and easy access to the same marine spots.

Once you are there, however, the island you choose mainly changes the atmosphere of your stay.

Our answer is fairly simple: Kecil for more energy and flexibility, Besar for peace and a more family-friendly atmosphere.

Kecil: the livelier of the two

Perhentian Kecil is generally the better choice for independent travelers, backpackers or anyone who wants a little more atmosphere after a day in the water.

This is where you will find Long Beach, the liveliest beach in the Perhentians, with more restaurants, small bars and accommodation options. In our guide, we particularly recommend it for its atmosphere and how easy it is to organize boat trips from there.

In the evening, the atmosphere stays relaxed but more lively, with tables on the sand, music and fire shows along Long Beach.

Just a short walk across the island, Coral Bay already feels completely different: quieter and especially pleasant for ending the day with sunset views.

That contrast is what makes Kecil particularly appealing.

Besar: quieter and more family-friendly

Perhentian Besar is better suited if your priority is simply to settle into a beautiful beachfront hotel and enjoy a peaceful stay.

Its coves are generally quieter, and the accommodation is more geared toward couples and families. It is also the island we would choose for someone mainly looking for a few days of rest.

Tourism Malaysia also describes Besar as having a calmer atmosphere, with several resorts and dive centers located directly by the water.

That does not mean Besar is isolated or that there is nothing to do. Marine activities are obviously still at the heart of the stay.

The real difference is what happens once you are back on the beach.

Which Island Is Better for Snorkeling?

On this point, we would not choose one island purely for its underwater life.

Boat trips make it easy to move between different snorkeling spots around the Perhentians: Turtle Point, Shark Point, Coral Garden, Romantic Beach and D’Lagoon are among the classic stops.

During our stay, we saw turtles at Turtle Point and reef sharks at Shark Point.

Both islands belong to the same marine area, which is particularly well known for snorkeling and diving.

So choosing Kecil or Besar does not fundamentally change the underwater experience.

Can You Easily Travel Between the Two Islands?

Yes, and this is probably the most important thing to understand before booking.

Water taxis run between the beaches and between Kecil and Besar. You are therefore not stuck on the island where you choose to stay.

That is why we prefer choosing accommodation based on the atmosphere you want, then using boats to explore the other beaches. In our guide, that is exactly the approach we recommend: sleep where the atmosphere suits you, and move between the two islands depending on your plans for the day.

There is no need to change hotels simply to experience the other island.

So, Kecil or Besar?

To keep it simple:

Choose Kecil if you want more restaurants, a livelier atmosphere, Long Beach, evenings on the sand and an environment that suits independent travelers.

Choose Besar if you are looking for more peace, quiet coves, a couple or family stay and a more relaxed atmosphere.

And if you really cannot decide, our preference would be Kecil for a first stay, simply because it offers more variety between the energy of Long Beach and the calm of Coral Bay, while still making it easy to reach Besar by water taxi.

The real mistake would be thinking you have to choose one island and never leave it.

Our view: Kecil is the most versatile choice for a first stay. Besar has the advantage if your absolute priority is peace and quiet. Either way, water taxis make it easy to enjoy both islands.
